Pet owners are a tough crowd. They will forgive a lot — but not a scoop that breaks on day three.
We learned this the hard way. Early on, a pet supplement client ordered a standard PP scoop we had used successfully for human supplements. Within a month, returns started coming in. The scoops were cracking at the handle joint. The problem was not the material — it was the usage pattern. Pet owners scoop more aggressively, often digging into compacted powder at the bottom of the tub. The handle design that worked for gentle protein powder users failed under real-world pet owner conditions.
We redesigned the handle with a thicker cross-section and reinforced the joint. The client has not had a return since.
The Sustainability Angle Actually Works Here
Unlike some categories where sustainability claims feel forced, pet owners genuinely care. A 2024 survey by Packaged Facts found that 62% of pet supplement buyers consider eco-friendly packaging important to their purchase decision. That is higher than the general supplement market.
Our PLA scoops appeal directly to this audience. The material decomposes in industrial composting facilities within 180 days, and the scoop looks noticeably different from a standard white PP scoop — it has a slight matte texture that communicates “natural” before the customer even reads the label.
Branding on a Scoop: Worth It?
Branded scoops add roughly $0.02-0.05 per unit at volumes above 5,000. Whether that is worth it depends on your distribution channel. If you sell on Amazon, a branded scoop differentiates your listing from dozens of generic competitors using the same product photos. If you sell wholesale to retailers, the scoop is less visible and the ROI is harder to justify.
We typically recommend embossing over printing for scoops. Embossed logos do not wear off, and the raised texture adds a premium feel that complements higher-priced pet supplements.
